May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

In an effort to raise awareness about the prevention of skin cancer, the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology is joining the American Academy of Dermatology to spread the word throughout May during Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

It is currently estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Numbers like that make a world without skin cancer seem to be an impossible goal. But it is in our reach. Skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent. Yet, sadly, one American dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, almost every hour.

Join us to spread the word about skin cancer. Protect the skin you’re in and schedule your annual skin screening with one of our doctors.

Spot Skin Cancer

What are the different types of skin cancers and the best treatment options for care?

Skin cancer is a serious issue, and can occur anywhere on the body. However, it is most commonly noticed on areas of the skin that have been previously exposed to the sun, such as the face, the neck, the chest, the arms, and the hands.

Skin cancer can develop into one of three types, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma. All three of these types of skin cancers can be diagnosed, treated, and prevented with the help of Dr. Mary Lupo at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology.

A skin cancer diagnosis is the first step needed before treatment is planned. The type of skin cancer can be identified with a biopsy. A biopsy allows a portion of the problem area to be sent to a laboratory for testing to see if there are cancerous skin cells in the sample. If so, it is reported to the dermatologist and the dermatologist will notify the patient of the results.

Once a diagnosis has been made, patients must act quickly to avoid the spread of cancer if it is a melanoma. There may be further tests done to make sure it is not metastasizing. A patient’s prognosis will be greatly determined by many factors including the stage, type, and size of the cancer, as well as where it is on the body. Patients in good health may also have a better chance at fighting skin cancer than those who have weak immune systems or are dealing with other medical issues.

After diagnosis, the treatment is planned.  For easy basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, simple excision or topical chemotherapy are options. More severe or recurrent basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, especially those on the face, require mohs surgery.  Finally, melanoma needs an oncological or plastic surgeon to excise with wide margins and do possible lymph node dissection.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

You’ve heard it over and over… “Get your annual health checkups because early detection can be lifesaving!” But sometimes it’s hard to face what might come out of an exam.  It could be nothing, but it could also be lumps, bumps, surgery or scaring.  You never know, but if you want to stay healthy, don’t put off checkups.

Here at the Lupo Center, it’s important to get an annual skin exam to check for any changes in the skin.  Being diagnosed with any kind of cancer is always disturbing, but it can be worse on our self esteem if the cancer is on the face or a visible part of the body. The first and most important step is to get any suspicious spot excised with cleared margins, and then if needed, we can discuss options for scar improvement. We have several treatment options including lasers and fillers that erase skin cancer surgery scars. We individualize each case to utilize the optimal treatment(s) to make the scar a distant memory.

The images below show a case of a patient who had a skin cancer removed.  Her scar was treated with the state-of-the-art Excel V to improve redness and the Fraxel Dual to improve texture and soften the scar tissue.

To raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer, and to encourage early detection through self-exams, the American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday (May 5, 2014) and May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

Your risk of getting skin cancer is real. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology provides several ways to stay skin healthy:

Prevent. Never leave home without the proper sunscreen and enhance your sun protection with a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, shade and dietary supplements.

Detect. Look for new changing, itching or bleeding spots on your skin (see chart above).

Live. Schedule your annual skin exam with one of our dermatologists.

Help us spread the word about the risks of skin cancer on Melanoma Monday and all throughout May. Take the SPOT Skin Cancer Quiz and share it with your family and friends.

If you’re planning a spring getaway, you may be tempted to get a base tan before you leave.  Tanning in a tanning bed won’t prevent sunburn.  Time spent in a tanning bed will increase your risk of developing skin cancer.  To keep your skin looking and feeling its best, use a daily sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and don’t forget to reapply, especially if you’re in direct sunlight!
