Is Sunscreen More Important in the Fall?

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and the most susceptible to the elements. While we often think of sunscreen only during the summer months, it is essential that patients take a different approach to their skin care regimen all year long!

Yearlong skin protection is essential for healthier skin and for reducing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. Drs. Mary Lupo and Kate Holcomb at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology educate their patients on the importance of proper skin protection. This includes the use of sunscreen every day.

Wearing sunscreen every day makes it a habit and ensures patients have the protection they need, especially if they are outdoors longer than expected during their lunch break or in the later evening hours. Dr. Mary Lupo and Dr. Kate Holcomb suggest wearing at least an SPF 30 sunscreen every day on the face and exposed skin. Cosmetics can be applied over it, and many foundations include sunscreen as well for optimum protection.

There are several tips that patients should keep in mind for all year long sun protection:

Avoid tanning

While some patients believe there is such a thing as a “healthy tan,” it doesn’t exist. Avoid tanning and instead, if you want that glow, consider over-the-counter lotions that can provide similar results without harmful skin damage.

Seek the shade

Whenever you are outside, make sure you seek shade whenever possible, and keep in mind the positions of reflective objects like sand, concrete and snow that may bounce sunlight onto your skin.

Wear the proper clothing

Consider a broad-brimmed sun protection hat that can protect the face, neck, ears, and the scalp. It is also best to wear pants and long-sleeved shirts whenever possible.

Wear sunscreen

Sunscreen application should be part of your everyday routine, and should be done all year – regardless of the season! It should also be re-applied if you are outside for more than two hours. If it is not possible because of the activity, such as swimming, then an SPF swim shirt can be worn.
